The Dykema Definitive DSO Conference gathered 1,000+ members of the dental community in Colorado with a focus on DSO Growth, Change and Excellence. There was an emphasis on clinical excellence, patient care, providing women leadership in the industry and private equity fueling growth. Overall, it was impactful 3 days for all attendees.

Clinical Excellence

Poor oral health leads to poor systemic health. The DSO industry is committed to patient care and overall better patient outcomes. This focus on patient care and clinical excellence will drive ongoing financial success.

Private Equity Fueled Growth

New DSO platforms are continuously emerging led by private equity backers who believe in the dental industry. The next 10 years should provide continued evolution and growth fueled by private equity backing. With an increasing number of dentists opting to join group practices versus having a sole practice, having strong business leadership is necessary to lead this growth and change.

Women in DSO Leadership Needs Focus

Women in DSO was a primary focus at the Dykema conference. Relatively few dental executive positions are held by women. There is a big focus on solving this problem and advocating for advancement. Dr. Aman Kaur who founded the organization and other prominent women took part in several impactful discussions on this initiative.

Brian Colao and the Dykema Dental Industry team put on an incredible and meaningful conference. When the focus for an industry is on enhanced patient care, improving roles for women and improving access to dental services, great things will happen.

While one hack may not be something that works for you, it’s worth checking out to see how many other entrepreneurs and business leaders get the most out of their day.

What would be a valuable simple hack to be more productive? In an article by CEO Blog Nation, entrepreneurs share some valuable to help them be more successful. Here are a few hacks that I found to be extremely helpful:

Meditation:

Deborah Sweeney from MyCorporation.com uses Headspace. According to Deborah, “Headspace gives me a moment (or a few minutes) to clear my mind, focus my intentions and set myself for a productive, effective, and calm day. I find it to be my most effective hack for handling anything that comes my way on any given day.”

Email Management:

Jennifer Harder, a mortgage broker in Victoria, British Columbia commented that she “set[s] out a dedicated time to check my emails. It’s critical to schedule time in your day to check your emails; you can do this twice a day, once in the morning and again later in the afternoon.”

Napping:

Erin Mastopietro of Dope Dog is someone that fully believes in the benefits of a nap to boost her performance. “Take breaks at regular intervals to keep the brain fresh and working. If you work too much, it will exhaust your energy and reduce your capacities thus, limiting your potential. Hence, it is important to take naps or breaks regularly.”

Prepare for the Next Day:

Michael Roub of Inflection 360 “take[s] 10-20 minutes each evening to prep for the day ahead.” He continues by saying, “I get more done in my first two hours when focused like this than I often do in an entire unfocused day.”

These are just a few quick examples of ways to be productive as an entrepreneur, business leader or anyone that wants to get more out of their daily life.

I recently attended the DEO (Dentist Entrepreneur Organization) Fall Summit and it is clear that a tremendous amount of collaboration, patient focus and business enhancements are making a meaningful impact on the dental and DSO sector.

The DEO Summit

Dentist Entrepreneur Organization (DEO)

As stated by Darin Acopan, EVP/Partner of the DEO, “The DEO Summit is all about growing through connections. You need to work on yourself, your team, and then your business – in that order. The content and networking effects that we intentionally curate at our events is second to none.”

Patient Conversion – Scheduling Enhancements

“People come to the DEO because it makes them better. That’s what Patient Prism does, too.,” said co-founder and CEO Amol Nirgudkar. “We help your front desk team or your call center tam convert more callers into new patients by giving them constant training. It’s not enough to identify a problem; you need to also give your team the tools and training to immediately fix it.”

New Services

Dr. Jonathan Greenburg, CEO of SleepCertified offered his impressions of the DEO conference. “It was easily the most productive conference I have attended this year – from speakers & panels to individual meetings. As owner of both SnoreExperts, a multi-location specialty practice that exclusively treats sleep apnea and SleepCertified, the professional division of Zyppah that trains practices how to scale in dental sleep medicine, the DEO Summit is ideal for dentists/owners like me who wear multiple hats.

Patient Experience

Gavin Harrison, who is Head of Strategy & Growth for Imagination Design Studios, explained the value created by patient experience. “For any practice, growing your patient base through referrals is a critical component of scaling up. And, if you are a family-focused practice, this means the experience kids have while in your office is especially important. The good news is that a memorable patient experience can be like jet fuel when it comes to building your reputation within the community.”

DEO Takeaways

I attend several conferences each year, but I am continually impressed by the information sharing and on target learning offered at DEO. Industry leaders and new DSOs alike get great benefit from attending. For vendors and other industry professionals like myself, it certainly demonstrates that there are still tremendous and exciting opportunities ahead.

DSO – Continued Growth and Investment

In a previous article 5 Dental Trends (DSO) for the Next 5 Years and a follow up interview with Dr.Bicuspid.com in January 2019 (DSOs, private equity, and the future: An interview with Michael Roub), I discuss investment trends and key considerations moving forward. Both well established dental practices and younger, recently developed group practices will be considered for potential private equity investment and platform development.

Integration and Culture

The challenge with growth and consolidation is continuing to have cohesive operations and operating efficiencies. Otherwise, you are adding size but not creating true value. A practice must be able to show this success or at least the potential for creating value for a private equity investment to make sense. Additionally, cultural fits, payor mix and other factors will influence investment decisions.

Regardless of the challenges, expect extensive private equity investment in the next five years. Dental specialties will see significant consolidation opportunities as PE firms look to create a distinctive DSO offering.

I recently discussed the benefits for businesses of giving back to communities and the positive impact revenue and customer perceptions. The value of what a company does with its power reaches more than the consumers; professionals want to be a part of something that’s doing good for their communities that doesn’t look like another PR campaign.

The acts of giving back, all boost staff morale in the workplace. Positive work environments have shown to be more productive, which also creates more incentive for recruits to become a part of your business.

Professionals want to be a part of something that’s giving back to their communities that doesn’t look like another PR campaign.

Recruiting just got easier

These days, professionals are actively seeking businesses that provide opportunities to volunteer and advocate for social issues that resonate with them. Giving your employees the opportunity of designated volunteer hours allows them the chance to give back to the issues they care about most.

An article from Fortune lists 50 companies that are doing exactly that, and the feedback is incredible. Great Place to Work, a Fortune partner, does annual surveys getting feedback from employees on why they do or do not think their company is a great place to work. It’s clear after reading through the results that people genuinely value the opportunity to give back.

Promote staff morale and community

In another article from Fortune, the results of a study showed that “giving back is associated with greater employee retention, higher levels of brand ambassadorship on the part of workers and more enthusiastic employees.”

How to set your initiatives

The research from the Great Place to Work survey offers insight on all the ways you could possibly incorporate this concept into your business, but the most common opportunity showed to be offering designated volunteer hours for your staff to go out and support whatever initiative they resonate with.

When it comes to giving back, the opportunities are endless. Doing good for your community has shown to increase revenue, promote positive consumer perceptions, and inspire your staff.

Social impact efforts benefit business in multiple ways. First, you give back to the communitys are proving to be beneficial to businesses in multiple ways. But, they can also lead to improved business performance as media and customer reactions drive additional benefits.

Different Ways to Give Back

A business can donate a portion of their profits to charity, but hosting events and offering other campaigns create great marketing opportunities as well. Plus, employees often are eager to volunteer their own time to help make a difference. If your business can provide a much needed service to those in need, it will be particularly gratifying to help. You do not have to come up with an elaborate event, it just needs to benefit the community.

Many Examples in Healthcare

Many healthcare providers have found great ways to help members of their communities. Some doctors offer free health screening days to those in need. Many dental groups will offer free exams and teeth cleanings as well. In these examples, the providers are able to share their unique skills to truly benefit the community. This is much more valuable than a cash donation. The media and word-of-mouth from consumers both will share the efforts of these providers which can help increase future profits.

Consumers like to support businesses that serve their communities. So, doing good is truly good for business. Employee morale also positively impacted as it gives a sense of purpose. So, I encourage all business owners to get out there and make a difference in their communities.

“I Don’t Know.” can be the Right Answer. You can’t know everything, that’s why there are experts. We’ve conditioned ourselves to believe having quick answers to problems proves our competence and leadership. We also believe saying “I don’t know,” can be seen as a weakness.

This is where the mindset needs a shift. We can’t possibly know everything, so reaching out to sources with particular expertise and knowledge proves to be a valuable strategy when it comes to problem solving and efficient work.

“I Don’t Know.” can be the Right Answer

Learn to Delegate

The use of delegation is much more valuable to the success of a business. In delegating tasks to experts in their fields, you’re able to focus your efforts in areas where you are confident, and they in theirs, thus pushing your goals further.

Balancing skill sets helps each employee focus on their strengths when completing tasks and projects. It also makes the delegation process smooth and easy.

Buy Yourself a Little Time

When you say “I don’t know,” a simple way to maintain control and professionalism is to complete the sentence with “…but let me find out and get back to you.” This gives you time to do some research and find out what you need to know to progress.

Being able to admit when you don’t know something may be difficult at times, but giving the wrong answer is much more problematic. Whether you find experts to help, or do the research to get your own answers, you need to be honest to achieve success. With that you can find the power in saying, “I don’t know.” To read the full article click here.

It’s quite obvious that no one is perfect, and neither are their businesses. So why should you hold yourself to an unattainable standard when you can productively push toward company goals?

The post “Perfection is the enemy of success.” – Mark Cuban Is Right appeared first on Michael Roub.

When you focus on perfection, you won’t see the options that can push your business forward. Developing a growth-oriented mindset will open your mind to possible solutions that will help drive your business forward. By redefining your failures as opportunities for growth, your goals are not restricted to unattainable standards and valuing your time allows you to use it efficiently toward your goals.

Growth-oriented mindsets vs. perfection

“Perfection is the enemy of success.” – Mark Cuban is Right

A growth-oriented mindset has been shown to be the most effective mindset for achieving goals, gaining new skills, and developing positive changes in your life. You’re more likely to ask yourself, “what can I do here to improve the situation,” which can help in progressing your business efficiently.

Mark Cuban explained a valuable strategy during New York Advertising Week; when addressing areas where you lack certain skill sets, find the people who compliment your skill set to allow more opportunity for growth and business improvement. Let those who are willing help you improve your business and tackle opportunities quicker.

Change your definition of failure

Cuban says, “you only have to be right once.” Your biggest failure will be giving up completely so perseverance is an important factor when starting or maintaining a business. By seeing your failures more as opportunities, you can see problems from a different perspective and thus, find solutions quicker. It also allows you to keep a generally positive outlook.

Your time is valuable

With the technology of today, lengthy phone calls and meetings are not necessary to keep a consistent dialogue of priorities. Email threads can be much more efficient in maintaining a record of progress and saving everyone time. In addition, your balance of work and personal life has an effect on efficiency and mood which can certainly impact business operations. Optimize your schedule around your most productive hours and ensure that you are not bringing work home with you to keep a strong work-life balance.

It’s quite obvious that no one is perfect, and neither are their businesses. So why should you hold yourself to an unattainable standard when you can productively push toward company goals?

Lists are a simple solution to keeping us productive during the work day. But, they can often become a source of stress or anxiety as well. These simple steps can help optimize your process to ensure more productive and consistent work.

Make your list the night before

As a business owner, your time is valuable and needs to be utilized in the most efficient way. If you’re like the majority of the population, you consider yourself to be the most productive in the morning. If so, make it a routine to write out your list at night. By doing so, your energy in the morning will be used to efficiently complete your tasks.

Prioritize your list using the 4 D’s

This is a simple strategy used to simplify the daily tasks of running your business. Establish what on your list can be done now, done by others, deleted entirely, or delayed until another day.
